Whenever liquor is being sold in New Zealand, be it in a bar, restaurant, ten pin bowling alley or bottle store, a liquor licence is required.

We advise that before you sign a lease or sale & purchase agreement on an existing business or vacant premises, certain licensing checks should be made prior to making the contract unconditional.  These include:

  • background checks on any applicable liquor licence
  • background checks on resource consents, carparking requirements, existing use rights
  • any potential previous noise issues.
  • application for temporary authority (if the premises are currently licensed)
  • application for the compliance certificates
